Good Model Poses Biography
If you ever run out of ideas, get stuck in creativity or simply need some guidance when shooting female subjects, you may use following posing samples as a “posing cheat sheet”. Many pro photographers use such a technique when preparing for and during the photo shoot.
The poses in this article are selected as initial reference. I would advise to look at the poses together with your subject, especially if she’s inexperienced. During a photo shoot don’t hesitate to discuss with the subject which pose is or isn’t working in any particular situation. It’s usually very productive and you both will feel more confident in what you are doing.
There are many components that must be brought together to create a great shot. Hair, makeup, wardrobe styling, lighting, the right photographer and concept are all equally important; but poses and facial expressions can make or break a shot. As a model, your job is to make sure that your presence before the camera reflects confidence and expertise. Regardless of whether you are doing a beauty, fashion, commercial or glamour shoot; you must be 100% aware of 100% of your body - from your facial expressions to the positioning of your fingers and toes! Some people are born with a natural gift of being able to pose and configure their faces into the perfect expressions - but most people are not. Here are some tips to help you BRING IT at your next shoot.
I'm pretty sure that there is NO pose that hasn't already been done. Sometimes it's difficult to be creative when it comes to thinking of poses - especially when you don't have any props to play off of. A great way to get your creative juices flowing is to use magazines as references. Why reinvent the wheel? Find a magazine that reflects the look that you're going for and copy the poses. If you're shooting a beauty look, refer to a hair/makeup ad in Allure Magazine or your favorite hair magazine. If you're shooting a commercial look, refer to a Sears or Newport News catalog. If you're shooting a sexy glamour look, pull out a copy of Maxim. If you're modeling jewelry, tear a David Yurman ad out of your W Magazine. If the poses you see were good enough to be published in an internationally published magazine, they're good enough for you to emulate - and to add your own spin to!
